Insect Pests in Grain

Handling and storage of grain requires several basic skills in order to make timely pest management decisions, while also protecting the quality of stored grain and the environment.

A fundamental knowledge is required to prevent and manage insect infestations using a pest management plan that includes practical non-chemical and chemical methods.

Issues related to insect infestation are the natural habitats of stored product insects, and species-by-species descriptions including identification, biology, ecology, behaviour, feeding preferences and damage.

It is especially important to identify the different insect pests associated with grain.

For successful insect pest management, the following must be determined: methods and devices used in sampling, the overall value of sampling grain, preventive and responsive management techniques and proper use of grain protectant and fumigation.
